Recreation and Healthy Active Living Leadership Course

Program Overview:

In partnership with the Town of Aurora, ASK Online Canada is pleased to offer the Recreation and Healthy Active Living Leadership, Grade 12 credit course (PLF4M). This Grade 12 university/college preparation course is a unique, blended-learning opportunity that involves 110 hours of combined in-person, online and community mentorship experiences. Please note the “At-a-Glance Course Requirements” below and ensure all in-person sessions can be attended before applying. Any potential conflicts should be discussed prior to registration.

Students will explore the benefits of providing a welcome, safe, and positive space for lifelong participation in physical activity and develop leadership skills that contribute to a successful participant experience. In addition, students will apply their learning to host a community event and provide mentoring opportunities that enhance the health and well-being of others.

Successful completion of this course provides students with a grade 12 Ontario High School credit and various certifications for youth leadership positions in recreation and sport, including HIGH FIVE Sport, Emergency First Aid, National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Fundamental Movement Skills, and Leaders in Play.

Prerequisite: Any health and physical education course.

Eligibility:

  1. To address the existing gap in female sport and recreation leadership, this course is currently being offered as a female only leadership opportunity with potential for future expansion.
  2. Applicants must reside in Aurora or the surrounding area with the intention to provide leadership or service to community members of Aurora and surrounding area through program delivery.
  3. All applications will be reviewed before being accepted and must include scanned copies of the following documentation:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q.1. If I am currently a Grade 11 student, can I register for this course?

A.1. Yes. The only prerequisite for this course is that students have successfully completed any health and physical education course as well as the other eligibility requirements listed above.

Q.2. I live outside of Aurora. Can I register for the course?

A.2. Depends. The course is open to Aurora residents or those who live in surrounding communities and intend to provide leadership or service to community members of Aurora and surrounding area through program delivery (e.g., Town of Aurora, local sport organization, etc.).  If you are unsure, contact Hailey Jones, Town of Aurora Sport & Community Development Specialist, [email protected] .

Q.3. What are the start and end dates for this course?

A.3. This session begins February 15, 2023 and ends April 26, 2023. This session will run every Wednesday/Thursday. Note: March 15 will not run due to March Break.

Q.4. Where are the required in-person sessions taking place?

A.4. These sessions are being hosted by the Town of Aurora and will take place at The Aurora Public Library, 15145 Younge Street, Aurora.

Q.5. How does the course work?

A.5. After you have been accepted into the program, you will receive a link with a username and password that will give you access to the course online.  In this uniquely blended course, students complete approximately 54 hours of course work online through ASK Online Canada and for the duration of the course hours, participate in programs that result in certificates noting successful completion of various activities that serve to satisfy the course requirements such as High Five Sport, Emergency First Aid Program, National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Fundamental Movement Skills and Leaders in Play.  Students are required to successfully complete the culminating activity requiring the organization and hosting of a community event as well as reflect on the process.  Students complete course work under the supervision of an Ontario certified teacher and other professionals supervising the certificate programs.

Q.6. How do I register for this course?

A.6. To register, please visit ASK Online Canada and complete the application process for the Recreation and Healthy Active Living Leadership Course (PLF4M).  Once your documents have been received and reviewed, you will receive an email indicating you have been accepted into the program and then you may pay the tuition fees to complete your registration.  No application fee is required for this course.  To apply, be sure to submit all required documents by uploading them to the ASK Online Canada registration page: (1) Report card indicating successful completion of a health and physical education credit; (2) Informed Consent Agreement – Community Participation; (3) Town of Aurora Waiver; (4) Mentorship Application Form.  These forms are available in the links above.  After your application has been reviewed and accepted, you will receive an email confirming your placement in the program upon receipt of tuition fees of $475. Q.7. What forms of payment are available?

A.7. Payment of tuition fees to ASK Online Canada can be made by Paypal, credit card invoice, e-transfer, or cheque.  Please contact ASK Online Canada ([email protected]) if you require an alternate payment arrangement.  You will receive a receipt for fees paid after payment has been received.

Q.8. How will I receive my report card confirming my credit?

A.8. Once you have completed all course requirements, a report card will be issued and emailed or mailed to both you and your home school.   Your home school will add your report card to your OSR and upon successful completion of the course, add your credit to your transcript.

Q.9. What if I am applying to university for September 2023? How will OUAC receive my grade?

A.9. If you have applied to university through OUAC, you can edit your account settings and add ASK Online Canada as an education institution at which you are studying.  Once you do this, ASK Online Canada can upload your mid-term and final grades for your OUAC application.  Please notify ASK Online Canada that you would like your grade to be sent to OUAC.  Please email [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns.

Q.10. If I have completed other National Coaching Certification Program courses, do I need to complete the Fundamental Movement Skills certification?

A.10. Yes. All students must complete the Fundamental Movement Skills certification to be eligible to satisfy course requirements and pass the course.

Q.11. If I have completed other HIGH FIVE certifications, do I need to complete the HIGH FIVE Sport certification?

A.11. Yes. All students must complete the HIGH FIVE Sport certification to be eligible to satisfy course requirements and pass the course.

Q.12. If I have completed any of the certifications previously (e.g., Fundamental Movement Skills, HIGH FIVE Sport, Emergency First Aid-within 3 years), do I need to take them again?

A.12. No. If the certification has been completed and up to date, students are not required to take the certification again. A copy of the up-to-date certification must be submitted to the ASK Online Canada with your initial registration documents.

Q.13. If I have completed either of the certifications previously (Fundamental Movement Skills and HIGH FIVE Sport), do I get a discount on the tuition fee?

A.13. No. The tuition fee does not change if you have already completed the required certifications.

Q.14. I am not available on the dates that the course is offered; will this opportunity be available again?

A.14. Yes. The Recreation and Healthy Active Living Leadership course will be delivered again in the future, contact [email protected] to be put on a distribution list when registration opens for more courses.

Q.15. I am not a female but interested in taking this course, will there be an opportunity in the future?

A.15. Yes. Please contact [email protected] to share your interest.  Based on the expressions of interest, there will most likely be opportunities in the future for additional high school students to take the course.
